Most cockroach calls in Brisbane are about the large brown cockroaches that come in from outside. American and Australian cockroaches live in drains, garden mulch, sub-floors and roof voids, and wander inside in warm, humid weather, often turning up in bathrooms, laundries and kitchens. A few now and then is normal in a Queensland summer, but regular sightings usually mean there is a breeding spot close to the house.

Older homes in suburbs like Red Hill, Highgate Hill and Yeronga, with timber floors and open space underneath, tend to have more of these large cockroaches than newer slab homes. Clearing leaf litter and thick mulch away from the walls, keeping drain covers in place and fitting seals under external doors all help once the treatment is done. Large cockroaches also fly on warm, still days, so keeping outdoor lights off near open doors helps too.
